The next time that you visit New Orleans, we invite you to step into the past at The Degas House, bed and breakfast and home of the renowned French Impressionist. The resplendent hallway from a past era invites you into the elegant house where Degas lived and painted while in New Orleans. The Degas House offers a gateway to the personal side of a legendary painter. Drawn to the city by two of his brothers and a cluster of maternal relatives, New Orleans became the only American city in which Edgar Degas ever lived or painted. The house stands as an important record of Degas' time spent in the Crescent City where he began some 20 works. Large collections of prints of Degas’ paintings adorn this Esplanade mansion. The common spaces of the house, including the room believed to be Degas' art studio are open to the public. A delicious Creole breakfast is served in the congenial atmosphere of this sunlit room, which brings the brilliance of the outdoors in and invites guests to venture out to a tropical New Orleans patio. Each of the Bed & Breakfast rooms is named for a significant Degas family member and offers a retreat from the crowds in the city. The color selections of the rooms were guided by Degas' letters home from New Orleans and by some of his paintings of subjects in the house. All rooms include private baths and some include the modern convenience of a whirlpool tub. Our Estelle suite has the exclusive use of the upper balcony that stretches across the front of the house, providing a tree house view of Esplanade Avenue. Included in your room rate would be deluxe continental breakfast through the week, hot Creole style breakfast on the weekend, a guided tour of the house, free off-street parking, and all taxes.
