Disappointed The 'Herbst Haus' is Kay Herbst's home, with two bedrooms for B&B use. While the house is in a relatively good location and quite pretty, it was the one B&B disappointment on our 2-week New England tour which encompassed 6 B&Bs. Here's why:
* We seemed to be ‘intruding’ on her life and her time. She did not make us feel relaxed and welcome, but rather that we were imposing ourselves on her. She warned us not to scratch things with our suitcases. She was always busy elsewhere and in the morning for breakfast, completely absent. Which brings me to…
* No hot breakfast!! This was the real killer and a major disappointment. I was furious, in fact, considering the amount of money we paid. We came down in the morning on our last night of a wonderful two weeks of glorious B&B breakfasts to find a cold, empty room and a table set with muffins, cereal and juice. At a B&B you are *paying* for a nice breakfast – that’s the second ‘B’ for crying out loud. My husband is a morning meats kind of person, and when Kay asked us if we had everything we needed, we both said politely at separate times that my husband prefers eggs or some other hot breakfast. She looked at us wordlessly and made no offer. Clearly an empty question on her part.
* She only takes cash. And at $195/night this is very inconvenient, considering it's nearly all of most people's banks' daily cash withdrawal limit! Not good when you're a tourist and need cash on hand. Also, not good to be carrying this much cash around, period.
* No hairdryer. This has become a standard amenity, and Kay Herbst’s has been the only place we’ve stayed – in about the last 5 years! – that didn’t have one. Plus the soaps were so old – like something from an old hotel firesale – that they shattered when we tried to use them.
* The sitting room for guests had no lights. We went in there after dinner and there are no lamps, wall lights or anything. It’s clearly done to discourage guests from ‘making themselves at home’ in the sitting room in the evening, the only time you’d really use such a room.
All in all, relatively disappointing. Seems like she’s doing it to make an extra buck (and a big buck at that) without putting in much real effort in the hospitality department. Or if she thinks she’s doing a good job, she needs to take a course in B&B Hospitality 101.
