Located in historic Harriman, Tennessee's Cornstalk Heights National Historic District, Bushrod Hall represents the elegant lifestyle of 100 years ago. We offer our guests an experience in living history when our home was the Hall of Domestic Science of the American Temperance University and when Harriman was a booming utopia for "thrift, sobriety, superior intelligence and exalted moral character..." The decor of Bushrod Hall includes the red oak foyer and massive staircase, which was imported from Sweden in 1890, mosaic hardwood floors, and tall ceilings. Eight types of piano finish woods are featured in the family and guest rooms. Bushrod Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This beautiful Queen Anne Victorian home was completed in 1892 as the home of the S. K. Paige family. Mr. Paige and Fredrick Gates, one of the founders of Harriman, had a contest during the building of their homes to see who could build the most elaborate home. Although Mr. Gates won the contest with his Cornstalk Heights, it was later torn down to make way for Harriman's Middle School, leaving Bushrod Hall as a testimony to that time. After the death of their daughter, the Paige home was sold and donated by Bushrod James of Philadelphia to the American Temperance University. In his honor, the house served as the Bushrod W. James Hall of Domestic Science for Young Ladies from 1895 to 1908. Here, young Victorian ladies learned the arts of etiquette, entertaining, proper table settings, and running a household.
